I hope that perhaps someone viewing this may be able to help me. I have
a copy of "Life among the Savages" --not a first ed, but signed. The
inscription reads:"For Anne and Joe Brau???(rest of last name illegible)
with warmest affection, Shirley Jackson,Aug.1953." I have read that she
rarely signed anything, therefore, I question the authenticity of
signature. Can anyone tell me anything? I really have no intentions of
parting with the book, just think it is a great conversation piece,
really. Oh, my e-mail is mcblackwood@hotmail.com. Thanks!

I really enjoyed looking through your webpage. I especially like the
little graphs, those were so neet! WOW! I thought it was really a
great idea to put all the pictures in to your web page as well as the
newspaper klipping. By the way, where did you get all of those kinds
of thing like the newspaper klippings? Aren't those from like the 1940-

Thanks for this web site. I'm very much interested in trying to get in
touch with any of Ms. Jackson's children for a literary paper I'm
working on in graduate school. I noticed Sarah Hyman DeWitt has a guest
book entry on this site, but I couldn't find an e-mail address for her,
or any of the other offspring. If anyone knows how to reach any of the
children, or if any of the children read this site, I'd be most
appreciative of an e-mail. Ms. Jackson has been one of my favorite
authors for my entire adult life. I would love to add some personal
interviews to my literary paper. Thanks. Best regards. -- Mary Ann

I am honoured to see such a lovely and warm site for my distant
relative. She kept me up many hours at night, thinking about old Hugh
Crane, and what exactly pushed his second wife down those long, dark
stairs. I consider The Haunting of Hill House to be an American
classic, and probably the best and most beloved ghost story every to be
penned. Thank you for such a lovely site. I will bookmark this and come
back often. :)

Really enjoyed reading your web-site; you've done a great job. I've
been fascinated by SJ for many years - first, when reading the spooky
terror of "Haunting of Hill House," and then realizing that this was
the same author who penned "Raising Demons". Talk about a dichotomy in
writing styles - (or maybe subjects - the style is always the same;
superb.) Anyway, keep up the good work and I look forward to keeping
in touch with this website.

I liked this page very much. I thought it was really cool getting to
see Jackson throughout her life.
I'm 19 and have read about half of all Jackson's works. I really do
enjoy her characters and her creepy stories. I first got interested in
Jackson, when I picked up "We Have Always Lived in The Castle", while
walking through the book cases of my favorite used book store. Since
then I've been hooked.

I am simply in awe of Shirley Jackson's writing. She makes it seem so
easy! (Was it to her? I think so.)

I'm currently reading Life Among the Savages. She knocks the
glistening image of Fifties-style of mothering on its rear with her
honesty and candor. Thank you, Shirley, for showing us that mothers
are, first and foremost, human.

THANK YOU for this wonderful web page! i became aquainted with sj's

Road Through the Wall. i'm looking forward to reading them! The Magic
of Shirley Jackson is what i'm reading now (yes, i know that i have
most of the works included in this, but the fact that her husband put
these works together gives them a new flavor! the intro that he wrote
for this collection made me cry for days, go figure!) thanks for
recommending the autobiography- i'll have to look for it at the

i'm also enjoying reading this guest book. now for the questions- was

Add me to your list of people who thought they were the only ones who
knew about Shirley Jackson's genius. Like you, my fascination with her
began at age 14 when I read "The Lottery" in English class. I then
(while still in high school) bought "The Haunting of Hill House" from
the Literary Guild (at that tender age, I was already saving up my
lunch money and forging my mother's signature to buy books)--and then
stupidly, somewhere within the last 35 years, lent it to someone and
never got it back. When I went back and reread "Haunting" in paperback
a few years ago, I was surprised to find that it was so short--I had
remembered the book as being at least 600 pages long! Thanks for this
site; I enjoyed reading both your comments and those of the other
guests--it was like coming home after having been away for a long time.

When I was 13 --and also fat, and ugly, and outcast, and busy making
preparations to become a genius ;) -- I checked "We Have Always Lived
in the Castle" out of the library. I was the first to do so in 20
years! (Why??!) Anyhow, I started reading it in the tub, and remained
there for hours, I became so absorbed in this tale, reading and re-
reading. At 1 a.m. I was wrinkly as a prune and felt like I'd been
kicked in the chest as on the pages before me the villagers pillaged
and destroyed Merricat's home. I have read everything but Hangsaman,
which I can't find anywhere. Ms. Jackson's stories draw from loneliness
and disturbance, which is comforting to the lonely and disturbed ;)
Tread carefully in Shirley's world, her tales won't leave you
unmoved.
*Memo to certain guestbook signees: Shirley passed away over 30 years
ago. She does not maintain this site from beyond the grave.

I too have sound something in Shirley Jacksons literature. So far I have
read we have always lived in a castle, and the haunting of hill house. I
really wish she had written more novels. She was an amazing women. I was
suprised to hear that the people in my local book store had never heard
of her. I am 16 years old, and I was given a list of authors to chose
from for a project. Everyone had to have a different author, and for
some reason I chose her, never having heard of her before. I may have
tons of friends, and I am usually happy in life, but I have my problems.
I too relate to the females in her novels. I hope your life is better
now, and I admire you for standing up to your teachers. I have done that
once or twice myself. If you ever find time, and want to, go ahead and e
mail me back. I would love to hear what you have to say.

After checking this website, I'm amazed at how many people seem to
think that Shirley Jackson is alive and that they are addressing her
personally. I enjoy Shirley Jackson's work very much and have
read "Private Demons" several times. I have noticed other authors
quote her and I have written several papers for college on her life and
work. The truth is that I enjoy her work so much, the assignments
weren't really work. Several of the local book stores in my city hold
all Shirley Jackson books for my first choice of purchase. I'm glad to
discover that there are other fans out there and that all respondents
to this site aren't just looking for info to complete assignments.
P. S. No, I won't share my papers, so don't ask.

Sorry, I hit the wrong key and exited...I had recently purchased the
1st edition of "Life among the Savages", a signed copy of "We have
always lived in the castle", and especially: a signed copy of "The
Haunting of Hill House." I have a friend who is an "indy" producer and
loves Shirley Jackson as I do. She very much wanted to film
"Always...Castle"...she approached the estate lawyer for the Hyman
family, to get the rights, and the lawyer LITERALLY said:"Why should we
give you the rights? You're a nobody" !! And look what they did to the
recent adaptation of "The Haunting" They basically kept the names and
changed the whole story. I can't believe that the family allowed that
travesty. Anyway thanks for the link to my site, there've been a number
of influences in my art, including Jackson and Dali (who I met twice)

I've read Ms. Jackson's work since I was in high school, starting with
the Lottery -&- We Have Always Lived in the Castle. She is one of the
best authors of our century (akin to Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King).
To my surprise, I discovered that Ms. Jackson had lived (and died) in
Bennington VT. I only live about a 90 minutes away, so decided to stop
and inquire about her. Some residents never realized she lived there,
some didn't even know who she was. It seems that she is a somewhat
forgotten icon in the town. How sad. I'm going to try to find out more
about her - where the house is that she lived in, where her children now
reside, what cemetary she's buried in. She was a fascinating person and
worthy of keeping her memory alive. Long live her literary legacy!

i absolutely love your page, you have given many people insight to
Shirley Jackson's work, which i think the world is deprived of. I also
would like to thank you for keeping your site so original. I was very
upset and angry when i saw the crappy remake of the the haunting. None
the less, you have done a amazing job and take comfort knowing that many
people dicovered Shirley Jackson's works the way you did, her words
reach out and comfort people everywhere.

Thanks so much for creating such a thoughtful and well constructed
site. My first experience with the magic of Shirley's work came when I
was eight. Sneaking out my room late one Saturday night, I crept down
the hallway, carefully slipping by my parents bedroom and into the
living room. It was there, in the glow of some early 70's T.V. set,
that I watched in horror as poor Eleanor ran her car off the driveway
and into that tree. I was hooked (and subsequently slept with a light
on for over a year)! I quickly read "The Haunting of Hill House" and,
as I grew older, graduated onto Shirley's other works. I still own that
original dog-earred, yellowed copy of "The Haunting..." and after
twenty-five years and several readings, I still consider it the best
novel ever written. As a publisher and fiction editor of a literary
magazine, her body of work is a constant inspiration and one that I
advise young and beginning writers to investigate if they are serious
about pursuing careers in fic

classmates think I'm strange because I loved it so much, but that's

ending of her story had a very unexpected ending. Great site!! Best one

have to read two stories by you. I have picked The Lottery, but I
don't know which other one to read. If you wouldn't mind writing back
to me and suggesting another short story by you, I would be very
thankful. Also could you add some things like:

1. Where you were born educated, worked and die?
2. What did you do with your life?
3. How did the historical time period in which you lived influence
your life and writing?
4. Was your work praised? If so, Why?
5. Did you have an influence on society? If so, why?
6. What do the critics feel influenced you?
7. Did you react to something happening in the world or some societal
change?
8. Is there any specific critisism you'd like to share?

Let me just say how relieved I was to find such a great page for such
a wonderful author. I am currently writing a research paper on Ms.

Shirley obsession started a couple years ago when my mother told me to

very strong woman, and she makes me want to be an author. Thanks for
the great page, and especially the pictures :)

After I saw both version of The Haunting, I was determined to read The
Haunting of Hill House. I didn't get to until last Christmas. When I
read the first the sentence, I was changed. I recently finished We
Have Always Lived in the Castle. I borrowed Come Along With Me from
the library and read The Lottery and it is the most disturbing thing I
have ever read, it was great. She has a way of taking small
insignificant events or lines and making them one of the most important
parts of the story, like the stone lions in The Haunting of Hill House,
or the taunt in We Have Always lived in the Castle. I am now on a
quest to read every story that she has written, I know that that is
probably impossible but i will try. I only wish she was still alive to
continue her magnificent work.

I read her short story the "Lottery", in my Modern American Lit class
last week. Up until that point all the stories we were reading were
boring and made you want to sleep. But, when we started reading
the "Lottery" I couldn't and didn't want to put it down, to go to
lunch. Anyway, this is a great idea and whoever made this I thank you
a lot this will help me and others a lot on projects. Cause nowhere
else are there decent photos of Shirley Jackson. Thank you again!

Many thanks for this website dedicated to one of the great authors of
the horror genre. I saw "The Haunting" (the original, not the pitiful
recent remake) as a teenager, and couldn't sleep for weeks! It wasn't
until last year that I had the courage to read "The Haunting of Hill
House," and I was hooked. This website is a fine tribute to Shirley
Jackson.

This is wonderful that you have dedicated a website to
Shirley Jackson. I'm an actress and I've been doing research
on Shirley. I'm playing Eleanor in a play version of
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. I just wanted to thank you
for this. I've really found her to be a fasinatiing person
and a truly gifted writer. Thanks!!!

of, was so big and influential. Great site, thanks for helping me out
a bit!!

I found your site to be very useful. I was very impressed with the
opening paragraph of how the book made you feel. Your phraseology was
dead on (sans a few typos). I am glad someone finally made a site like
this. Thanks.

Thanks for a great site about a marvellous and truly outstanding
writer. I think the isolation you felt as a child, as you mentioned in
your article on influences, is an astute comment. Most writer's feel
this isolation - i write myself, and feel that sometimes I'm the only
person around - but when you read something along the lines of Jackon's
work, you can really feel that you are not alone in this world. She
captured the essence of what it is like to be outside of the world and
yet be part of it, so eloquently. I think she is also speaking, on
some levels, about the dominance of our peer group culture, where
people are not judged on their individual merits, but on character
sterotypes, and scant information. I find this to be the ultimate
message included in her finest short story 'the lottery'. Keep up the
good work, and the good site.

Thankyou, Jay

Just had to thank you for such a wonderful web site! I read "We Have
Always Lived In The Castle" while in the 8th grade, and have been
hooked on the writings of Shirley Jackson ever since (and I'm 37
now!). I remember reading "The Lottery" while in high school, and
thinking that it could have taken place in any American High
School...where some kids seem to get singled out to be tormented for a
reason that wouldn't be apparent to anyone who wasn't of the school (or
the village). This had a MAJOR impact on my thinking on how we view
others around us, and especially on the entire issue of prejudice. I
re-read most of Shirley Jackson's writings each year to listen to a
kindred soul.

I think Stephen King really hit the nail on the head with his
dedication in his book "Firestarter": "In memory of Shirley Jackson,
who never needed to raise her voice."

After bouncing around uselessly between search engines and web links,
FINALLY I find a page with some understanding of Jackson's fiction (I
won't go into the review of The Haunting At Hill House at Amazon which
preferred the happified movie ending over Eleanor's demise).

I also like the photo gallery. Man, I wish I had Shirley Jackson's
library.

Your site rocks! It was just what I was looking for. My school is
putting on a performance of the play by Brainerd Duffield which was
adapted from The Lottery by Shirley Jackson,in which I am to play the
role of Mrs.Watson(mrs delacroix in the actual story), and our director
asked us to find info on Shirley Jackson and on The Lottery in
general. Thanks to you I found everything I needed. I think you've
done a great job. Shirley Jackson was a great female author and this
is definately something to remember her by. Thanks again.

Hey Donna, Nice update to your Shirley site! When I first found this
site last year your info prompted me to go out and buy all the Shirley
books I could find - plus get "Private Demons" (a wonderful biography,
interesting and well written.) Shirley Jackson is a major talent and
deserves a place on the web where people can find out more about her and
discover her writing. Thanks for providing such a place!

I read "The Lottery" in high school years ago. Now that I'm living in
Europe and commuting via train, I decided to go back and read all of the
authors whose works I never had time to re-read and enjoy. I had my mom
ship me all of Shirley Jackson's work I could order last time I was in
the States. I just read LIFE AMONG THE SAVAGES and laughed out loud. I
can see that when I get to the end of my books and realize there's
nothing mo
